How to Choose the Right RV Sewer Hose: Length, Durability, Fittings and Storage

An RV sewer hose is a basic piece of equipment, but choosing the wrong setup can make waste-tank dumping harder, messier and less reliable than it needs to be.
The best system is not necessarily the thickest or most expensive hose. It is the system that reaches the campsite connection, fits the RV’s waste outlet, connects securely to the sewer inlet, drains consistently and can be stored without contaminating other equipment.
This guide explains the main decisions in the order an RV owner should make them.
Start with six questions
Before choosing a sewer-hose system, determine:
- How far is the RV’s waste outlet from a typical campsite sewer connection?
- Does the RV have one waste outlet or two separate outlets?
- How much dedicated storage space is available?
- Will the hose be used occasionally or throughout an extended stay?
- Are extensions, supports or unusual campground adapters likely to be needed?
- Do you want a complete kit or separate components?
Those answers will narrow the choices more effectively than selecting a hose based only on brand or price.
1. Choose the right hose length
RV sewer-hose kits are commonly available in lengths such as 15 feet and 20 feet, while extension sections may be offered in shorter lengths such as 5 or 10 feet.
Why length matters
A hose that is too short may not reach the campground inlet without moving the RV or placing unnecessary tension on the fittings.
A hose that is much longer than necessary can be harder to support, rinse, drain and store.
The correct distance is measured from the RV’s waste-valve outlet to the campground sewer inlet—not from the sidewall of the RV.
A practical starting point
A 15-foot system may be adequate when:
- the waste outlet is near the rear or side of the RV;
- campground sewer connections are normally close;
- storage space is limited;
- the RV is used mainly at familiar campgrounds.
A 20-foot system may be more practical when:
- campsite layouts vary;
- the waste outlet is positioned farther under the RV;
- the sewer connection may be behind or ahead of the parking position;
- more placement flexibility is useful.
A shorter primary hose plus a separate extension often provides more flexibility than carrying one long hose for every situation.
Do not stretch the hose tight
A sewer hose should not be installed under continuous tension between the RV and sewer inlet.
Tension can place extra load on fittings and make the system more vulnerable if the RV moves, the hose shifts or someone steps near it.
2. Compare standard and heavy-duty construction
Manufacturers offer multiple sewer-hose grades, ranging from standard hoses to reinforced or heavier-duty systems.
Standard-duty hose
A standard hose may be appropriate for:
- occasional RV use;
- short trips;
- owners who replace equipment proactively;
- situations where low weight and low cost matter.
The tradeoff is usually less resistance to abrasion, crushing, repeated dragging and long-term exposure.
Heavy-duty hose
A heavier-duty hose may be better when:
- the RV is used frequently;
- the hose remains deployed during extended stays;
- the hose may contact gravel, concrete or rough campsite surfaces;
- the system is repeatedly compressed and expanded;
- durability matters more than minimum cost.
Thickness is not the only consideration
A durable hose still needs:
- secure fittings;
- useful flexibility;
- manageable storage dimensions;
- compatible caps and adapters;
- enough rigidity to maintain a drainage path.
Evaluate the complete assembly rather than judging the product only by the hose wall.
3. Decide between a complete kit and separate parts
Complete sewer-hose kit
Many kits include the hose, RV-side fittings, a clear or translucent elbow, an adapter for the campground inlet and storage caps.
A complete kit is generally the simplest choice for:
- first-time RV owners;
- replacing an entire worn system;
- creating a backup setup;
- avoiding compatibility mistakes between separate components.
Separate components
Buying components individually may make sense when:
- the existing hose is still usable;
- only an elbow or adapter is damaged;
- an additional extension is needed;
- the RV has two waste outlets;
- storage requires a custom configuration;
- the owner prefers a specific fitting style.
4. Check the fittings
A sewer-hose system requires a secure connection at both the RV and the campground inlet.
RV-side connection
The RV-side fitting should:
- lock positively onto the waste outlet;
- rotate without forcing the hose into a twist;
- remain secure when the valves are opened;
- be easy to remove while wearing gloves.
Swivel fittings can make it easier to align the hose and avoid unnecessary twisting.
Campground-side connection
The outlet end should fit the range of sewer inlets encountered at campgrounds.
Multi-size adapters are commonly included in sewer-hose kits, and clear 90-degree elbows are widely offered so the user can align the hose with the inlet and observe whether drainage has finished.
Why a clear elbow is useful
A clear elbow helps the user determine:
- whether liquid is still flowing;
- whether rinsing appears complete;
- whether a blockage may be present;
- when it is safer to disconnect the system.
The elbow does not replace careful valve operation or sanitation practices.
Caps matter
Storage caps help contain residual moisture and keep debris or insects from entering the hose.
Caps should fit securely without being so difficult to remove that the hose must be handled roughly.
5. Consider a hose support
RV sewer-hose supports use an elevated, sloped structure to hold the hose between the RV and sewer inlet.
What the support does
A properly arranged support can:
- keep the hose off rough or dirty ground;
- maintain a more consistent downward path;
- reduce low spots where liquid collects;
- help the hose follow the campsite layout;
- make rinsing and draining easier.
When it is most useful
A support is especially useful for:
- full-hookup campsites;
- extended stays;
- long hose runs;
- uneven ground;
- campgrounds that require hoses to be elevated.
Support length should match hose use
A 20-foot hose paired with a 10-foot support may still leave a significant section unsupported.
Consider the actual deployed length, not merely the compressed storage length.
6. Plan for RVs with two waste outlets
Some RVs have separate waste-valve outlets serving different tanks or sections of the unit.
In that configuration, the owner may need:
- two hose sections;
- a Y-connector or wye fitting;
- additional caps;
- enough support for both runs;
- a layout that avoids cross-flow or sharp bends.
Before ordering, inspect the RV and confirm:
- number of outlets;
- distance between outlets;
- route to the sewer connection;
- available ground clearance;
- storage space for the added components.
7. Make sure the hose can be stored
Sewer-hose storage should remain separate from potable-water equipment, food-preparation items and clean campsite accessories.
Measure the storage compartment
Before selecting a kit, measure:
- usable compartment length;
- diameter of any hose carrier;
- door or cap opening;
- clearance for fittings;
- whether the fittings must be removed.
Hose length alone does not determine storage fit because fittings and adapters may be wider than the compressed hose.
Collapsible storage length
Some hoses compress considerably for storage.
Confirm the compressed dimensions of the exact model rather than assuming every 15-foot or 20-foot hose stores the same way.
Dedicated storage is preferable
A dedicated bumper, hose carrier or sealed sanitation compartment reduces the chance of contaminating unrelated equipment.
Do not store a used sewer hose loose beside drinking-water hoses.
8. Include the supporting accessories
A complete sewer-hose setup may also require:
- disposable gloves;
- replacement caps;
- a clear elbow;
- a threaded or multi-size sewer adapter;
- an extension hose;
- a hose support;
- a Y-connector for dual outlets;
- tank-rinse accessories;
- waste-valve lubricant or service parts;
- a dedicated storage carrier.
The right buying decision is therefore usually a complete sanitation setup—not merely one hose.
9. Use and disconnect the system carefully
Always follow the RV manufacturer’s instructions for operating the black- and gray-water systems.
A typical process includes:
- Confirm that both hose connections are secure.
- Verify that the campground adapter is seated properly.
- Wear appropriate disposable gloves.
- Open the required waste valve according to the RV’s procedure.
- Monitor the hose and fittings while draining.
- Rinse the system using an approved method.
- Allow the hose to drain before disconnecting.
- Cap the hose and outlets before storage.
- Wash hands thoroughly afterward.
Do not use a drinking-water hose for sewer-system rinsing.

Buying a hose that is too short
Campsite sewer connections are not positioned uniformly.
Buying the longest hose without considering storage
Additional length may create a bulky system that is harder to drain and store.
Ignoring fitting compatibility
A hose is not useful if its outlet adapter does not fit the campsite connection or its RV-side fitting does not lock securely.
Choosing hose construction only by price

Forgetting an extension

Forgetting a support

Sanitation and drinking-water equipment should be kept separated.
